Sintered vs Reaction-Bonded Silicon Carbide: What Is the Difference

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a popular debris material due to its high hardness, wear resistance and good thermal conductivity. The fourth edition of the API 682 standard accepts both types of SiC as the default debris material.

The SiC reaction link (RBSiC)

Created by allowing melted silicon to penetrate the SiC and carbon mixture. The product contains a quantity of free silicon. The advantage is that it costs less, but free silicon can be attacked by some strong chemicals such as hardened alkali or special acids.

The SiC combustion (SSiC)

Burned at very high temperatures, there is no free silicon. It is better resistant to chemical corrosion and suits a wider range of leather materials, often with higher prices.

How to choose.

  • Strong corrosive leather or extreme pH: SSiC priority.
  • Regular service with water or hydrocarbons: RBSiC usually responds well.
  • Always check the manufacturer’s chemical compatibility table.
