Dry Gas Seals for the First Supercritical CO2 Power Cycle Plant

In Houston, Texas, the first commercial Allam oxy-fuel power plant operated a 50 MW scale test with a super-limit CO2 compressor (sCO2).

Conditions of Work.

According to John Crane, the pellet selected as the Type 28XP, must work with CO2 at pressures up to 178 bar and temperatures up to 204 degrees C in the pellet area.

How to design.

  • Use a single-blade configuration with a polymer ring as an auxiliary sealing part, because CO2 gas is not toxic.
  • Due to the high temperatures in the fourth compressed floor, the reed is designed to add an inner labyrinth, allowing the cooling air spray to create a thermal barrier.
  • The remaining amount of leakage must be handled carefully.

Results

According to the article, the dry gas removals are put into operation successfully and operate smoothly, in line with the design expectations.

Meaning is

The ultra-limited CO2 cycle and carbon capture are creating new conditions for debris, and dry-gas debris is the chosen solution.
