Mechanical Seals for Pumps

Mechanical seal is the most popular rotating seal solution in industrial centrifugal pumps. The seal helps prevent liquid leakage into the environment, reduces product loss, limits axle wear and ensures factory safety. Compared to gland packing, the mechanical seal leakage is much lower, consumes less power and needs less maintenance.

Principle of Mechanical Disruption.

The pad consists of a sealing side rotating with the axis and a sealing side stationary attached to the pump body. The two sides are pressed together by a furnace or a pipe, between which is an ultra-thin fluid film and both lubricating and sealing. The flatness of the pad and the quality of the fluid film directly determine the life of the pad.

Types of mechanical debris for popular pumps

  • Single fitting: simple structure, low cost, non-toxic liquid fit.
  • Double slurry: contains liquid blocking or buffering between two slurries, used for leaning toxic, flammable or solid particles.
  • Cartridge reduction: Pre-assembly into clusters, reducing installation errors and shortening machine stop times.
  • Metal folding pipe: resistant to high or very low temperatures, without the use of motion elastic jets.
  • Double split: Replace without removing the pump or engine.

Materials and Jigsaw.

Silikon carbide, tungsten carbide, carbon graphite or ceramic are commonly used. Subsequent sealing can be FKM, EPDM, PTFE or FFKM. The choice of material depends on temperature, corrosion, viscosity and particle content in the leather material.

The API 682 standard

With pumps in the petroleum and petrochemical industries, debris and auxiliary systems are typically designed in accordance with API 682 (ISO 21049). This standard specifies classification, installation configurations and discharge, cooling, piping plans to increase reliability and debris life.

How to choose the right mechanics.

To choose the right pump, it is necessary to know: the type of pump and the size of the axle, the speed of rotation, the pressure and temperature of the chamber, the composition and viscosity of the material, the content of solid particles and the requirements for emissions.

Early mechanical failure.

  • The pump runs dry or loses liquid membranes.
  • Moving, axle deviation or wear drive.
  • Wrong installation or handling of the faulty side inadvertently.
  • Abrasive solid seeds, crystallizing lips or vaporizing on the surface of the sludge.
